Interesting Facts About Hallux Valgus

Misalignment of the Big Toe

Causes, Prevention, Therapy

“Hallux valgus” literally means “crooked toe” and describes the condition of a bunion quite accurately: The big toe gradually shifts toward the outer side of the foot due to long-term incorrect strain starting at the base joint of the toe.

The reason for this is a shortened tendon that pulls the big toe into the misaligned position. As a result of the deformity, the outer metatarsal head protrudes on the inner side of the foot. The resulting bunion is exposed to increased friction and often becomes red and irritated.

Whether hallux valgus itself causes pain depends mainly on the severity of the deformity. In the early stages, the misalignment of the big toe usually causes only minor discomfort. However, the more the big toe tilts toward the smaller toes, the more it gradually pushes them out of their natural position and alignment.

As a result, pain-free walking and wearing normal shoes become almost impossible.

But why does the foot deformity hallux valgus develop in the first place?

The tendency to develop a misalignment of the big toe can be inherited. Incorrect footwear, excess weight, and weak connective tissue are also considered risk factors. In most cases, a bunion develops due to a combination of several causes.

Of course, a healthy lifestyle and the right choice of shoes have a positive influence on the development of hallux valgus.

Hallux valgus is one of the most common foot deformities and affects women particularly often.

The most common causes of hallux valgus are:

  • Weak connective tissue
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Incorrect strain on the foot
  • Tight or restrictive footwear
  • High heels

What can I do about hallux valgus?

Once hallux valgus has developed, the deformity cannot be reversed by conservative methods alone. However, there are various treatment options for hallux valgus that can help relieve symptoms without surgery, especially in the early stages.
