Characteristics

Nettles are herbaceous plants, and only rarely semi-shrubs. Depending on the species, location, and nutrient conditions, they reach heights of 10 to 150 centimeters. Their stems are usually unbranched and covered with stinging hairs and bristles.

The elongated leaves, which are also hairy on the upper side, can grow up to eight centimeters long and are deep green in color. They are pointed at the tip, heart-shaped at the base, and usually coarsely serrated along the edges. Within some species, however, there are also varieties with smooth-edged leaves. This characteristic is inherited recessively in the Roman nettle (Urtica pilulifera).

Medicinal Effects

Arnica flowers contain essential oils, flavonoids, and sesquiterpene lactones, which have anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties.

Today, arnica is used externally for injuries as well as rheumatic muscle and joint complaints. Its use is officially approved and clinically proven.
