Characteristics

Eucalyptus is a tree that can grow up to 60 meters tall and has a smooth trunk. The young leaves are oval to egg-shaped and blue-green in color. The older leaves are sickle-shaped, gray-green, and have smooth edges. When crushed, the leaves release a strong aromatic scent. The flowers are whitish in appearance.

Eucalyptus belongs to the myrtle family (Myrtaceae).

Medicinal Effects

The essential oil contained in eucalyptus leaves helps loosen stubborn mucus in the bronchi and promotes its removal. The loosened secretion can therefore be coughed up more easily. In addition, the oil helps clear a blocked nose.

Eucalyptus oil also inhibits the growth of bacteria and, when applied externally, stimulates blood circulation in the skin. Furthermore, the oil activates cold receptors in the skin and mucous membranes, creating a cooling effect.
